Periodontal treatment

The goal of periodontal treatment is to reduce bacterial infection. The treatment is realized through three phases: Deep root scaling and root planning (DRSP), Periodontal surgery and Recall visits.

1. Non-Surgical Treatments

Non-surgical periodontal treatment includes deep scaling and root planning (DRSP). It consists of careful cleaning of the root surfaces in order to eliminate plaque and calculus (tartar) from deep periodontal pockets, and to smooth the tooth root and remove bacterial toxins. Often a microbiological analysis is made to identify the bacteria causing the periodontal disease, microDent test (Hain, Lifescience, Nehren). Depending on the results of the test, systemic antibiotic therapy is prescribed, if necessary, to support the gum treatment.
Most periodontists would agree that after scaling and root planning, many patients do not require any surgical therapy. Nevertheless, non-surgical therapy does have its limitations and when periodontal health is not achieved, we must proceed with periodontal surgery.

2. Periodontal Surgery

Periodontal surgery is necessary when no reduction of periodontal pockets has been accomplished and the tissue around teeth cannot be repaired with non-surgical treatment.
The goal of the surgical treatment is to elevate the gums, deep clean the pockets and reduce their depth. The bone destruction should be repaired with the periodontal procedure: Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR), presented on the video below.

3. Recall visits

In order to prevent the progression of periodontal disease, the pocket depth should be reduced and the existing bacteria eliminated. Good oral hygiene of teeth with deeper pockets is difficult to maintain, which is why these pockets must be reduced. during the treatment. Reduced pockets and a combination of a good daily oral hygiene and professional maintenance care increase your chances of keeping your natural teeth and decrease the chance of serious health problems associated with periodontal disease. This is why recall visits are part of any periodontal therapy. They serve to keep the periodontal health under control and to re-motivate the patient for the maintenance of good oral hygiene
