Implant procedure

1. Clinical examination

We start with detailed dental clinical examination and radiographic analysis of the teeth and bone. The oral cavity has to be prepared for implantation. Before implantation, the teeth must be repaired, root canal therapy applied, and any gum disease cured. The gum tissue must be healthy and free from periodontal disease. The jaw bone must be of adequate quality to support the implants.
The ideal candidate for a dental implants must be in good general health. Various factors have to be evaluated before implantation: certain health conditions or risk factors, such as uncontrolled diabetes or smoking, for instance, must be taken into consideration. These conditions do not exclude dental implant therapy, but they have to be considered to make sure that they will not compromise the implant treatment.

2. Implant procedure

The implant procedure begins with local anaesthesia, the same we use for teeth repair. The procedure takes about half an hour. The gum is elevated, the implant is placed into the jaw bone in a carefully prepared surgical site and the gum is replaced. The implant heals in a closed environment for three to six months. During the healing period, i.e. the osseointegration process, the titanium implant forms a chemical and micro-mechanical bond with the alveolar bone.
If the implant has good primary stability, it can immediately be loaded with a crown; otherwise we have to wait for the osseointegration process, which may last between three and six months. In the meantime, the patient can use a temporary bridge or denture for chewing.

When the period of osseointegration is over, the implant is opened, an impression is taken and the abutment (B) and crown (C) can be made. You can now enjoy your new smile design!

3. Maintenance of the implants

Oral hygiene is very important for the longevity of implants: the same procedure as with natural teeth should be applied. Professional dental control must be undertaken twice a year.
